The length is about 100 kilometers (62 miles) from northeast to southwest. A third of the distance is dug and the rest of the route consists of Dochfour Loch, Loch Ness, Loch Oich and Loch Lochy. These lakes are part of the Great Glen, which is a geological fault in the Earth’s crust. There are 29 locks (including eight at Neptune’s staircase at Banavie), four aqueducts and 10 bridges along the canal route. The channel can take boats up to 45.7 meters long and 10.7 meters wide and 4.1 meters deep.
